Daniel Head, a senior majoring in economics/business administration and international studies at Rhodes College, has been selected to receive a 2004-2005 Watson Fellowship. He is one of 50 students whose selection was announced March 15 by the Thomas J. Watson Fellowship Program located in Providence, R.I. Nearly 1,000 students applied for the awards.

Founded in 1968, the Watson Fellowship is a one year grant for independent study and travel outside the United States awarded to graduating seniors at one of 50 participating institutions. The year of travel provides fellows an opportunity to test their aspirations and abilities, to view their lives and American society in greater perspective and to develop a more informed sense of international concern.

“We look for people with the passion and creativity to find solutions, work effectively with people and generally weather the bad days on the road while treasuring the glorious ones,” says Beverly Larson, executive director of the Watson Fellowship Program. The candidate’s academic record and extracurricular activities also are considered. Head will travel to Greece, Australia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Tanzania, and South Africa to pursue a project titled “From Messenger to Masochist: Cultural Motivations of Marathon Runners.”

“Very few people can explain why anyone would willingly subject themselves to the pain and agony of running a marathon, yet millions of runners, each year, throughout the world, participate in 26.2 mile races,” says Head. “By speaking with runners in six countries, I hope to learn about their motivations for running. I hope to discover if motivations are similar in different societies or if they create a running sub-culture that transcends national boundaries.”

“There are numerous aspects of marathoning,” Head explains. “These include the dichotomy of group versus individual goals through running, the sociological argument that sport is the center of culture, the nature of the individual and his/her internal logic, and especially, the cultural dimensions of exercise, all of which excite me and beckon me to discover more.”

Head has run in the Atlanta, Memphis, and Chicago marathons as well as the 50 Mile Swiss Alpine Ultra Marathon in Switzerland and says he hopes his travels will help him understand his own motivation for running. “As a marathon runner, I am baffled by why I put my body through such agony; all I know is that I enjoy it. The last six miles of any marathon are excruciating. It is a mental game of toughness and pain. In my daily life, however, running has helped me to become closer to my friends and develop a better sense of who I am.” Head adds the Watson Fellowship also provides him an avenue to travel the world and experience diverse cultures, learn new languages and meet interesting people.

The application process started early in the 2003 fall semester and included a personal statement, project proposal, budget, itinerary and interviews. Other students endorsed by Rhodes College for the Watson Fellowships include Zachary Glaser, Erin Hoekstra and Caroline Vance. Head says he is thankful for the support from friends and family as well as assistance in the application process from Rhodes professors Dee Birnbaum, Stephen Ceccoli, Kathleen Doyle, John Kaltner and Michael LaRosa.

Head, who is from Dalton, Ga., has been involved in numerous Rhodes activities including the Varsity Diving Team, Rhodes Student Government, Rhodes Activities Board, the Triathlon Team, Rhodes Singers and Rhodes Orchestra. He is president of the Mortar Board and elections chair of Omicron Delta Kappa. He plans to graduate in May.
